The men work in the cities whilst their families try to survive in remote and inaccessible villages in the countryside. When visiting home men bring a sinister ‘gift’ from the cities to their wives, the AIDS virus.
The wives have no means of protecting themselves from this deadly illness. As a result even the remotest areas have a rapidly growing number of orphans, whose only support are either elderly grandparents or distant relatives if they are fortunate, or no one if they’re not.
The other major killer is Malaria. The disease can strike anyone at any time and with different severity. Remote areas have no major medical facilities which can be a major worry to relatives. Abbas Rest is not immune, we lost a lovely boy called Yona aged 10 in September 08 who had contracted Cerebral Malaria and died on the way to regional hospital. He is sadly missed by all. With our regular medical checks and guardians bringing sick children to the centres, we can save a lot of little ones from disease and sickness.
