Abbas Rest Orphans

General information

Abbas Rest looks after children who have been orphaned by disease and accidents across the south of Malawi in three main areas, Chiringa, Muona and Ngabu.

We encourage children to live in their own villages and within their own culture. They are supported by guardians who are often elderly grandparents. Their needs are met by Abbas Rest in many different ways.

We supply the children with food, clothes, medical aid and education. There is also training in skills for their future. Last but not least we supply lots of love to give them hope for their own future.

Often homes of the guardians are repaired or rebuilt as necessary by Abbas Rest to ensure good living conditions.

We have a milk program which consists of supplying powdered milk to needy babies whose mothers cannot supply enough milk for healthy growth. There is also a porridge program which is for toddlers who need extra nourishment to survive.

Our orphan centres and sub stations are run by local Malawian people who have the interests of the children at heart. there are managers, house mothers, school teachers, centre workers, skill instructors, cooks and security guards to protect the children and properties.

Only those who have no one, reside in the care centres at Chiringa and Muona. These are ones with special needs and those who need extra care and attention for their well being. There is 24 hour care for the children in the centres. We have a purpose built dormitory in Chiringa for those who have to stay in the centre. It is called the Marion Smith House after a woman from Scotland. Please see attachment below for the full story of the Marion Smith House.

Several projects are currently running which are mechanical training; sewing; knitting; goat and chicken breeding, carpentry, tailoring and  latrine building. There are more in the pipeline.

Through our sponsors and donations, we are supplying goats to the families for milk and our program of breeding gives us more animals for other children. We are also providing a cock and chickens to families for eggs and the same system of "recycling" applies: chicks are born and distributed to other children.

we have supplied more physical apparatus in Chiringa such as a climbing frame, High jump and better seats for the swings to help the children in their development. They have proved a great success. we also supplied more balls and skipping ropes for outdoor activities in all centres.

We are in the process of fitting out  a couple of rooms  to incorporate  training rooms for girls to teach them secretarial and computer skills. This will give them more hope for the future. The money for this project was donated by a Finnish couple.
