  • The total number of orphans fed and cared for by ARO is now 281!

  • In 2005 ARO saved 48 babies whose guardians are given baby milk powder every month.

  • Skills training programmes have been introduced to the orphans 11-14 years of age; tutoring in tin-smithing, tailoring, sewing and machine knitting skills was given to the children in ARO.

  • Seven children in ARO were given a chance to start in a Boarding School in January 2006, through a donation from Scotland.

  • 5 of the latest orphans are babies: they received baby milk powder weekly from ARO along with beans & oil.

  • All the children have received a new set of clothes in July 2005 and in December 2005; ( a shipment arrived from Scotland in June with 74 boxes full of clothes, toys and books), and have received regular food.

  • 20 orphans in Muona received new school uniforms in March 2005 and 14 orphans in Masenjere in July 2005.

  • the mud huts of 21 orphans and their guardians in Muona, Beka and Chiringa were repaired by ARO in March-April 2005 and 14 mud huts in Masenjere were repaired in July 05.

  • A pipe for running water and a solar panel was bought for ARO Muona Orphan Centre in March 2005 (thank you to Rotaries in Castle Douglas for the funds and to Charles McGill for directing the project).

  • 15 orphans were baptised in Muona in March 2005.  They are: Ceciria Mashoni, Maocha James, Nyamakazi Ameriko, Mwaiwawo Hytone, Mercy Saidi, Ester Naganiso, Aida Patrick, Steliya Kapalamula, Lita sharpdora, Ndiwo Kalikokha, Femiya Selemani, Khefasi Phinifolo, Khristopher George, Ndikhala Falawo and Mazunzo Lafaile.

  • Toilets and shower units for the boys and girls have been built in the Muona Orphan Centre with the funding from the Rotaries of Castle Douglas.

  • A TV and video set were bought for fun & education.

  • In Chiringa a hybrid chicken project has been started to produce eggs for protein, with the money donated from Norfolk

  • A donation of schoolbooks arrived in October 2004 through Macmillan’s, for ARO-school, thank you!

 Three ARO Orphans Centres with a feeding programme for the orphans: Chiringa, Muona and Ngabu.
 Four Sub-stations each with a monthly feeding programme for the orphans: Beka, Namba, Nkhulambe and Masenjere).
 Marion Smith House, a Special Care Unit for ill and vulnerable children (Chiringa).
Ngabu House (ARO Ngabu Orphan Centre) for boys to continue their schooling.
ARO Afternoon School at the Chiringa Orphan Centre 5 days/week. A lunch is provided for the orphans attending. ARO Afternoon School at the Muona Orphan Centre 3 days/week. A lunch is provided for the orphans attending. Benches bought for the Afternoon Schools.
ARO Saturday Schools operating at the Namba and Beka Sub-stations once a week, and at the
Nkhulambe Sub-station 3 days/week (all with volunteer teachers).
All orphans in the ARO programme are provided with sleeping mats and blankets and are given soap once a month
All orphans in the programme are given a school uniform for their main stream school once a year (this year in September '04).
The teachers and volunteer teachers are provided with teaching materials, (blackboards, chalk, wall charts, books) and the orphans are provided with exercise books and pens, as well as materials for sewing and
crafts projects.

Training the managers of the Orphan Centres on a 3-day course at Mulanje Mountain in June 2004.
Training and empowering guardians for income generating activities and/or small businesses.

Providing baby milk powder for babies at risk of starvation (10 babies received help during the year).
Giving orphans First Aid and attention for their minor ailments at the Orphan Centres.
Providing transport to the nearest Medical Centre in severe cases.
Providing a store of medicines (monitored) in each ARO Orphan Centre and Sub-station.
Eye tests were given to all school age children in the Chiringa Orphan Centre in August 2004.
